We receive
many enquiries about training from people with little or no previous
experience of sailing and we are always keen to encourage new
participants into the sport that we enjoy so much. So we can often
arrange for a trial sail with one of our experienced members. Sadly
though, we can't offer the amount of time required to train somebody,
even informally, up to the point of being able to handle a boat on
their own. Nor do any of our members currently hold the qualifications
needed to provide recognised, formal training.
Instead we would recommend a course at a nationally recognised centre
which can offer training at all levels. Any course successfully
completed at such a centre would result in a Royal Yachting Association
(RYA) qualification which is nationally and internationally recognised.
Most facilities offering sail boats for hire will require this type of
qualification.
Such course are widely available as part of holiday packages at home or
abroad with specialist companies. More conveniently, possibly more
economically, but probably not as warm and sunny, courses are available
locally. There are centres at Rother Valley Country Park, Pugneys
Country Park, Carsington Sports and Leisure Ltd, plus many more.

When you
become a member of any sailing club you’ll want to be playing
an active part in helping run the activities. At SYSC, members all take
turns to be the Officer Of the Day (OOD) or provide Safety Boat Cover
for Racing. The OOD sets the course, starts the race, supervises
generally, waves the equivalent of the chequered flag and records the
results. The Safety Boat crew gets to play with a powered boat for a
change and cruise about getting in the way! You’ll be offered training
in either or both of these roles and you’ll be strongly encouraged to
take it up. The club only functions if we all ‘do our bit.’
