Training

South Yorkshire Sailing Club regrets that it is no longer able to offer dinghy sailing training in the informal way that it once could.

Instead we have formed very strong links with the outdoor pursuits centre at Underbank Reservoir near Stocksbridge. This is a nationally recognised centre offering training courses at all levels. Any course successfully completed at Underbank would result in a Yoyal Yachting Association (RYA) qualification which is nationally and internationally recognised. Most centres which hire out sail boats will require this type of qualification.

Similar courses are also offered at Rother Valley, click here for their RYA page.

When you become a member of any sailing club you’ll want to be playing an active part in helping run the activities. At SYSC, members all take turns to be the Officer Of the Day (OOD) or provide Safety Boat Cover for Racing. The OOD sets the course, starts the race, supervises generally, waves the equivalent of the chequered flag and records the results. The Safety Boat crew gets to play with a powered boat for a change and cruise about getting in the way! You’ll be offered training in either or both of these roles and you’ll be strongly encouraged to take it up. The club only functions if we all ‘do our bit.’
