We pride ourselves on being "The Friendly Club". Some people might
think that we
don't take sailing and racing very seriously - and they're right, we
don't! But we do have a good time. Laughter
is the main ingredient, followed
closely by food.
Through
the summer months, we meet to sail on a Wednesday night.
Afterwards we join together for supper, which
members take it in turns to provide - ranging from jacket potatoes to
gastronomic feasts. Our new home at Underbank may present a
few challenges on the catering front but enthusiasm and ingenuity will
soon overcome them.
During the
year there are numerous other events, usually
including food and a raffle. Among these are many with rather
grand-sounding,
traditional titles. But we don't do 'Grand!' -
Fitting
Out Supper
It's usually pie & pea supper and a quiz. Held at the Club
House or similar, it's one of the first social events of the season. A
good chance to catch up with all the people we haven't seen for a month
or two over the 'closed' season.
Regatta
One of the two 'big' events of the year but Henly it isn't!
Light-hearted sailing fun like an Anagram Race, a Team Relay and a
Sailing Backwards Race. Plus a big blow-out lunch, of course.
BBQ's
Speaks for itself. After sailing on the occasional Sunday or a Bank
Holiday Monday. Sometimes fully-catered, sometimes bring your own food
to cook on a communal fire and something to share with others.
Summer Camp-Out
Food of course, possibly a BBQ. Then music, dancing, conversation and
good times. Bring a tent and stay-over. Wake up by the water side,
ready for sailing. It doesn't get any better!
Laying Up Supper
The other 'big' event, this one at the end of the season. Our closest
approach to a posh event. We've used various venues for a proper
sit-down meal, usually in a private room. Followed by a short speech or
two and prize giving.
Theatre
Going
A group of club members have taken out Square Circle Membership with
Sheffield Theatres. Group bookings at preferential rates and a
discount at the bar help make a good night out with
friends even better. There's always room for more people to
join in.
And if you
can't sail on a Wednesday
Night because it's too dark, what could you do instead?
One option would be to meet friends in a pub for a drink or two, a chat
and a laugh. So that's what we do on two or three evenings
each month. And it doesn't hurt
to keep in touch during the long, cold, non-sailing, winter time.
So
if good company, friendly people, a relaxed atmosphere and some social
life sound appealing then South Yorkshire may be the Sailing Club for
you.
