REGULAR EVENTS
Most of our sailing at SYSC takes
place as part of an established programme of races.
We enjoy our racing without taking
it too seriously! There is keen but friendly competition, winners are
congratulated and losers are just as likely to be offered advice or at
least commiseration. This makes for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere
which suits us and is ideal for families, youngsters and those new to
racing a sail boat.
The regular racing programme is
divided up into various series of races to cover different types of
racing, times of year and likely weather conditions. They take place on
Sunday afternoons (12.30 start) from Easter through to the end of
November and on Wednesday evenings (6.30 start) from May to early
September when there is sufficient daylight. Safety cover and an organising
'Officer of the Day' are
provided at these times on a rota basis. Trophies for the various
Series are awarded at the annual, end-of-season Laying-Up Supper.
In
addition there are various ‘one-off’ events through the year, usually
on Bank Holidays and almost always including a social event such as a
barbecue.
Novice sailors (and sometimes
more-experienced sailors too) may be a little nervous of the idea of
racing. No need! It isn't compulsory! You are welcome to sail around
and explore to your hearts content. With such a large stretch of water
it's easy to keep out of the way of the racers. And the safety boat
crew will take every bit as much care of you as of everybody else. And
you'll be very welcome to join in if and when you're ready. Racing is
an
excellent way to develop and hone your boat handling skills.
Two classes of dinghy make up the
majority of our fleet, Streakers (single handed) and Mirrors (sailed
both single and/or double handed). SYSC is proud to be home to what is
probably the largest Streaker fleet in the UK. There are several very
actively sailed GP14’s and the club has its own GP which is available
for the use of members and guests. Also represented are Toppers and
Enterprises. You are welcome to
sail your own boat, whatever the class.
